Long Distance Movers And Your Options

Justin Babcock • Mar 13, 2022

If you're moving long distance, it's best to hire a professional mover. Even if you don't have a lot of stuff, it's likely to cost less than renting a truck and doing it yourself — and that's without accounting for your time.

Rates varying by company and distance. With most movers, you can choose from different services.

Full-service packing. The movers pack everything in your house using their own materials, including boxes and bubble wrap. This is generally the most expensive option but also the least stressful.

Fragile-only packing. Movers will pack only items that are delicate or breakable, such as televisions or mirrors, leaving everything else for you to pack. This is a good choice if you're on a tight budget but don't want to spend all your time packing boxes.

Self-packing. You do all the work using boxes and supplies bought from the moving company (or elsewhere). If you do this, make sure you give yourself plenty of time to get organized before moving day — last-minute packing is never fun!

There is also self-move companies like U-Haul and Budget that will rent you a truck and let you do all the heavy lifting yourself. But if you're moving a long distance and don't have a lot of friends with strong backs who are willing to work for free, this may not be the most cost-effective option for you.
